In this guide, I am going to share my thoughts on their designs, fitness and health tracking features, battery life, apps and a lot more. By the end you will learn which would fit your wrist best. Design & Durability

One of the reasons Apple Watches look so sleek and modern? The devices feature a square pixelated touch screen in a rectangle shape with rounded corners as well as aluminum, stainless-steel and even top-tier titanium options (a la Apple Watch Ultra). That’s much unlike Apple, where the bands snap on and off for a number of styles. Display is a little bright and sharp, and feeling smooth because of lightweight.

On the other hand, Garmin watches are aimed towards being rugged tough. Garmin models tend to have more of a watch-like round face, with tougher materials like fiber-reinforced polymer, hardened steel or titanium used in the construction. Despite not being the sharpest display, it uses a unique memory-in-pixel (MIP) display technology that is very easy to read in sunlight compared to conventional LCDs; though Apple’s OLED is also unreadable outside. The few times I have dropped my Garmin on the trails, it didn’t even notice  not a crack or scratch. On the downside, Garmins are generally more chunky because they cram in larger batteries and additional sensors.

Fitness & Health Tracking

Apple and Garmin both love to boast health tracking, but they compete at a slightly different level. Apple Watches (Series 11, Ultra 3, etc.) Great daily health: 24×7 heart rate, ECG for irregular heartbeat; blood oxygen (SpO₂); sleep tracking and guided workouts. It nicely synchronizes all of that data into the Apple Health app and then displays those delightful Activity Rings which call me to close them every day. This is ideal for general fitness, runs, gym sessions, bike rides and – if you enjoy competing with friends in challenges – and social activity too.

Garmin is the alternative, best for serious athletes. The Forerunner, Fenix or Enduro can tell you thousands of stats (GPS routes, VO2 max, cadence, power while running, recovery time etc). I discovered that Garmin has data galore! Those straps paired nicely with third-party services (Strava, MyFitnessPal) and could automatically log workouts without you doing a thing. Garmin tracks things that Apple simply doesn’t, like reps, weights, and stamina for ultra-running, triathlons or weightlifting. Apple incorporates some of this data into its Fitness app, but in practice, Apple is playful and easy to use for day-to-day fitness and health tracking while Garmin wears a thick training coach. Such as Apple tells me I hit my stand goal, or reminds me to start a workout if I forget – that’s smart. Garmin will inform me that my VO2 max was decreased from the prior week and recommend a light recovery day. I like doing either one, but Garmin stats do give me better indication of my training performance.

Battery & Charging

This is where Garmin really sparkles. The Apple Watch has its limitations, however: you need to charge them every night (or once every second day at best). As an example, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 might last upwards of around 42 hours with light use, though once I enabled GPS and music it barely made it through until morning. I was connected to a charger every day – which got tired rapid.

Battery & Charging

Garmin watches are like campers, they actually drink little juice. Garmin’s models will last through the week or longer on a single charge, with some of its more rugged ones going weeks. The Garmin Forerunner 965, for example, can endure roughly 23 days in smartwatch mode, while the Garmin Enduro 3 is renowned for lasting weeks. With Garmin I never fear having to search for a plug. I’m able to go on a week-long hike and still have battery life left. Software & Ecosystem

This choice some will depends on the your phone. The Apple Watch is designed to function only with mobile phone connected to iPhone. Apps from the App Store install directly to the watch, and functionality like Apple Pay and Find My iPhone syncs instantly. It really does feel like a mini iPhone on my wrist, pushing the Apple ecosystem of apps and services out a bit further.

Actually if you bounce between an iPhone and Android (like I do every now and again), Garmin has made this super easy – no full device wipe required. All of your health data from within the Garmin Connect app on your phone is aggregated and provides in-depth analysis. There are not quite as many third-party applications as on Apple Watch (no Apple Music or high-profile games) but it does have the basics covered maps, weather, timers and a little Connect IQ app store for watch faces and stats fields.

If you buy into Apple stuff (AirPods, iPhone, Mac etc.) then the Apple Watch works seamlessly. Garmin can be friendly if you have an Android device or change phones regularly. Note: Garmin has its own payment (Garmin Pay) and voice assistant options, but those are still working their way into the lineup on many models. Currently, the app ecosystem and Siri of Apple is more mature.

Smart Features & Connectivity

Apple wrist, a mini phone in the field of “smartwatch” department. You can read and respond to messages, receive calls, talk to Siri through it, and now control the smart home. Pick up a refurbished Series 10 or an Ultra 2 and you can save some cash while getting nearly the entire experience of the latest generation.

Garmin have a wider price range in their offering. There are entry-level Garmin fitness trackers for only a few hundred dollars. At the higher end, rugged watches such as the Marq or Epix Ultra move into the upper price bands (occasionally even close to an Apple would sell an Ultra for). Since Garmin has a bewildering number of models, you can choose one much closer to your budget. Most Garmin users that I spoke to acknowledge, even at mid-range (like the Fenix or Forerunner series) you’re better off with your money long run due to battery and detailed tracking.

Based on my experience, Garmin provides better value of money when it comes to battery life and sports data. Apple provides you the seamless, all-rounder experience and beauty. Both of them are investments: either you invest in an ecosystem (Apple) or hardcore fitness and reliability (Garmin). It really does come down to what your priorities are for your dollar.

Who Should Buy Which

Anyway, here it is, for me the bottom line: For the Apple lovers who live and breathe their famed ecosystem and want all of the smartwatch bells and whistles, stay with Apple. The Apple Watch is ideal for:

Apple/Techie: If you own or love your iPhone, Mac, AirPod, etc., you will adore the Apple Watch.

Casual Users: Excellent for routine health check, brief messages, and a smooth UI.

Smart capabilities: Because you want Siri, texting (which means replies), Apple Pay and LTE on your wrist.

Style-Minded: Multiple fashion bands. Works from gym to office.

Now, Garmin is for a more of an active and on the go group. You need to be leaning towards Garmin if you are:

Athletes & Outdoor Adventurers: Runners, cyclists, hikers and swimmers needing in-depth metrics and accurate GPS. Nobody will be left worrying about their watch dying mid-race.

Cross-Platform Army: No matter if you are an Android phoner (not that there’s anything wrong with that) or someone who has trouble sticking with a single phone, Garmin offers cross platform support across everything.

Battery Haters: Hate charging gadgets? Garmin’s watches can last for days or weeks.

Fitness Data Fanatics: If you need serious deep dive stats (VO2 max, training load, recovery, strength reps and so on) sheesh Garmin is all over this category. The training is ALL about the data.

Minimalists: For those who want fewer pings (you control how many (if any) notifications pass through; skip AFib alerts if that truly isn’t your thing); even fall detection gets the ax here

Summary

It is not one size fits all and there is no winners i̵. I find myself personally using the Garmin most days because I love the battery freedom and detailed fitness data. That is when I pull my Apple watch, for those nice smart features in your wrist and short chats. Either way, you need to pick between them and determine what’s more important: a committed fitness partner or a fashion-forward daily smartwatch companion.
